Wilson launch energy-efficient transport solution based on long-term industrial collaboration

Published: 15. April 2025

We are happy to introduce Wilson Eyde — a vessel developed to offer a more efficient and environmentally responsible logistics solution for raw materials used in aluminium production.

The vessel’s name, Wilson Eyde, is a tribute to Sam Eyde — the industrial pioneer and founder of Hydro — who played a central role in establishing Norway’s hydropower-based industry in the early 1900s. The launch marks a significant next step in a long-term industrial partnership with Hydro.

Wilson Eyde began service with its first call at Hydro’s production facility in Årdal on April 14 and now operates on a regular schedule. The vessel transports liquid pitch, a vital component in anode production, from suppliers in Europe to Hydro’s facilities in Norway. On the return leg, Wilson Eyde carries dry bulk cargo, maximizing utilization and reducing emissions per ton transported. The vessel replaces Leiro and Lindo, which have served this route reliably since the 1980s.

Equipped with wind-assisted propulsion and AI-driven fuel optimization, the vessel combines cutting-edge technology with operational efficiency. The wind-assisted propulsion system harnesses wind energy through aerodynamic technologies. By utilizing wind power alongside traditional fuels, it can reduce the overall amount of fuel required for operations. With the retrofitting of VentoFoils from Econowind on our first vessel, we are taking a concrete step toward more sustainable operations. This supports our target to cut emissions and deliver more energy-efficient solutions for our customers — creating long-term value across our operations and strengthening collaboration toward our shared goal of reducing emissions.

“Meeting tomorrow's environmental requirements is crucial to our success. We are therefore committed and grateful to develop innovative solutions that not only reduce our environmental footprint but also strengthen our collaboration with partners such as Hydro,” says Jostein Bjørgo, Commercial Director at Wilson.

Hydro is working to reduce emissions across its value chain by 30 percent by 2030, compared to 2018 levels. Shifting transport from road to sea, optimizing routes, and using more energy-efficient vessels are key components of this strategy.
